Professional Photo Format Support: HEIC, HEIF, TIFF & JP2

HEIC, HEIF, TIFF, and JP2 support is live on all paid plans

Product Changelog

Starting today, you can process HEIC, HEIF, TIFF, and JP2 images through AltText.ai. That brings us to six advanced formats total (we already supported AVIF and SVG). Same API, same accuracy—just more formats.

What's Actually Changing

HEIC/HEIF Support

Every iPhone since 2017 saves photos as HEIC files by default. Better compression than JPEG, same quality. If you're running an e-commerce store or handling customer photos, you've probably been manually converting these to JPG before uploading. Not anymore.

TIFF Support

Photographers and print shops work in TIFF because it's lossless. Your source files stay at full quality with layers intact. Now you can generate alt text from those high-res originals instead of converting to web formats first.

JP2 Support

JPEG 2000 is niche but when you need it, you really need it. Medical imaging, archival preservation, that kind of thing. We're seeing more requests for it, so here it is.

How It Works

Upload your image through whatever integration you're already using—API, WordPress, Shopify, the browser extension, whatever. We detect the format, convert it to JPG behind the scenes (using Cloudinary), run it through the AI, and send back your alt text. Takes a few seconds. You don't need to do anything different.

Pricing

Advanced formats cost 2 credits per image instead of 1. We have to convert them to JPG first, which costs us more on the backend. So: HEIC, HEIF, TIFF, JP2, AVIF, and SVG are all 2 credits. Everything else (JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, BMP) stays at 1 credit.

You'll need a paid plan to use these. We're not offering them on the free trial because the conversion infrastructure is expensive to run at scale.

Six Advanced Formats, One API

Between these four new formats and the AVIF/SVG support we added last year, we're now at six advanced formats total. iPhone photos, professional TIFF files, vector graphics, archival formats—all through the same API you're already using.

That's It

Nothing to configure. If you're on a paid plan, just upload your HEIC/HEIF/TIFF/JP2 files like normal. We'll handle the rest.
